What is a broker and why do I need one?

1 A broker provides investor access to stock exchanges. When a company undertakes an IPO or other form of capital raise, the newly issued shares become publicly traded on a securities exchange, like the London Stock Exchange.  Brokers provide access to the buying and selling of these shares on exchange after their issue.  Brokers usually charge a fee for their services.
2 A requirement for the trading, settlement and custody of your shares. As an individual investor you do not have direct access to the exchange, you need a broker to handle your buy and sell orders.  It is the broker who seeks to execute the order on your behalf on exchange.  The broker will also arrange for the settlement and custody of your shares and investment funds following any executed trade on the exchange.
